About ITC Stone Informal Volume
ITC Stone is an extended family of typefaces that actually consists of three sub-families: serif, sans serif, and a new designation, informal. Each design has a roman and italic version in three weights: medium, semibold, and bold. The three basic designs have the same cap heights, x-heights, stem weights, and basic proportions, and while each typeface can stand on its own, all 18 typefaces have been designed to mix successfully with other members of the entire family. The informal evolved after Sumner Stone received numerous faxes and letters printed on laser printers. He soon realize there was a need for a typeface appropriate for these types of personal and business communications. The process of designing the ITC Stone family began with pencil and paper, but most of the work was done with interactive drawing software on a computer. In fact, only about 100 of 4,000 drawings were made with pencil and paper. ITC Stone is the product of Mr. Stone's 22 year romance with letterforms that began as a calligraphy student of Lloyd Reynolds at Reed College in Oregon. Stone also worked as a lettering artist at Hallmark cards, and as the director of typography at Autologic, Camex and Adobe Systems, Inc. before opening his own studio, Stone Type Foundry in Palo Alto. |
